The Rideau Centre is the major retail destination within the City of Ottawa with connections to the Westin Hotel and the Convention Centre. The Ogilvy’s building and surface parking used to take up a large portion of the north east corner of the site. This location is now the site for an additional to the existing Rideau Centre. The addition is called the Rideau Centre Expansion but it is a part of a larger redevelopment initiative with the Rideau Centre to rebrand this central shopping destination. The entire project is the Rideau Centre Revitalization and includes façade improvements, new stores, the addition, and future updates to the pedestrian bridges.
This project required a Minor Variance application to permit additional height for various components of the addition and the façade improvements on the existing Rideau Centre facing Rideau Street. Our role was to prepare the Planning Rationale and to review the four tests of a minor variance as set out in the Planning Act. We also presented the application at Committee of Adjustment.
We prepared a second Planning Rationale tailored for the submission for Site Plan Control for the entire Expansion project.
